Other Important Attractions A natural history museum, The Field got its start during the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition held in Chicago. It housed the event's biological and anthropological exhibits at the core of the museum's current collection. The collection has expanded through expeditions, acquisitions, gifts and traveling exhibitions. Spend a day (or two! there are more than 32,500 animals living at the Shedd) visiting the creatures of the waters at the Shedd. Get up close to a Beluga whale, some fresh water rays, a giant pacific octobus, and even a couple of sharks! The Shedd is a must see in Chicago, it is, after all "The world's aquarium" The Art Institute's permanent collection of paintings, drawings, photography and textiles includes the largest compilation of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works outside the Louvre.
